One Week Left to Sign Up for Cancer Study with Clara Maass Medical Center
Clara Maass Medical Center invites people ages 30-65 who are cancer-free to sign up for long-term Cancer Prevention Study through the American Cancer Society.

What if you could prevent someone, a family member, friend or complete stranger, from getting cancer? Would you do it?
Help Clara Maass Medical Center in its mission to reach as many people as possible in its surrounding communities to sign up for the long-term Cancer Prevention Study called CPS-3 by Tuesday, June 11, and be one of the hundreds of thousands participating in the study nation-wide! Approach a friend or a loved one and participate in the study together.
Clara Maass Medical Center and Barnabas Health are partnering with the American Cancer Society to recruit volunteers for CPS-3. Volunteers will work together with researchers for the duration of the study in the hopes that a cause for cancer can be discovered along with clues to preventing the disease.

“We lost my grandmother to breast cancer when she was only 49. I never got to meet her but her story has inspired much of what I do every day,” said Jill Wargo, Director of The Cancer Center at Clara Maass Medical Center. “Please consider being part of this very important study so that your daughters will get the chance to spoil their granddaughters some day!”
“This study provides a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Americans to participate in lifesaving cancer research,” said Fran Mascia, ACS Executive Vice President. “We are excited to offer this opportunity for New Jersey residents to make an appointment and enroll in the study at a Barnabas Health location of their convenience. We need passionate people who are committed to fighting cancer. While the American Cancer Society has been conducting these types of studies for decades, their world-class research department can only study new and emerging cancer risks if members of the community are willing to become involved.”

However, the study isn’t just open to Barnabas Health employees. ACS is looking for 300,000 people across the United States who represent a diverse population. The requirements are simple:
- Volunteers must be between the ages of 30 and 65 and never have been diagnosed with cancer.
- Over the course of the study, participants will be asked to fill out follow-up surveys every few years.
- To enroll, volunteers make a one-time visit to a Barnabas Health facility where they will be asked to provide a waist measurement, small blood sample and complete a survey online.

“Many individuals diagnosed with cancer struggle to answer the question, ‘What caused my cancer?’ In many cases, we don’t know the answer,” said Mascia. “CPS-3 will help us better understand what factors cause cancer, and once we know that, we can be better equipped to prevent cancer.”
“Clara Maass Medical Center offers comprehensive treatment for cancer patients during all levels of their journey to healing,” said Mary Ellen Clyne, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer, CMMC. “But as health care professionals, we too dream of a world that is someday free from cancer.”
