NUTLEY, NJ — U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill recently paid a visit to a medical school in Nutley to push for more federal funds to combat heart disease in women.

Sherrill, who represents New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District, toured the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine last month to meet with campus leaders and speak with students about the hands-on experience they’re getting in the health care industry.

The medical school is located on the ON3 development site in Nutley and Clifton, which replaced the former Hoffmann-La Roche campus several years ago.

The congresswoman said it was “wonderful” to tour the campus and speak with students.

After her tour, Sherrill sat down with Taya Glotzer, a professor of medicine at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine for a conversation on the congresswoman’s proposed legislation, the HEART Act (watch the video below).

According to the congresswoman, the proposed federal law was introduced as part of her “Jersey STRONG” agenda. If it gets a green light, it will create a grant program that will allow hospitals, community health centers, public health departments and medical/health professional schools to design accredited Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs specific to heart disease in women.

Sherrill said the bill will “give our doctors the tools they need to treat women in our communities and address disparities in heart health care for women.”

“Our medical system needs to rethink its approach to heart disease and women’s health care at large, from the manifestation of symptoms to pain management and treatment,” Sherrill said.

“Failing to recognize the prevalence and presentation of heart disease in women and the different symptoms women can experience during a heart attack leads to poor care and in the worst-case scenario preventable death,” she added.

Sherrill also recently paid a visit to Nutley’s neighbor, Belleville, to push for the repeal of federal policies that she says is unfairly targeting the wallets of retired emergency responders. See Related: Mikie Sherrill Visits Belleville Firehouse To Push For Benefit Changes
