Beachwood Teens Indicted In July Assault On Teen, Mother, During Brawl

Chad Andresen is accused of sucker-punching the teen, while John Shevlino is accused of kicking the mom in the face when she intervened.

Two Beachwood 18-year-olds have been indicted on charges they assaulted a Toms River man and his mother after a brawl in front of a crowd of people on a Toms River street back in July, according to a report.

The Asbury Park Press reported that Chad Andreson and John Shevlino each were indicted last week on counts of third-degree aggravated assault.

The indictment states they attacked James McGrath, 18, and Lori Cairns, 38, whom police identified as McGrath’s mother, around 1 a.m. July 24 near Haines Road and Cedar Drive.

Authorities have previously said Andresen sucker-punched McGrath in the back of the head, knocking him down and leaving him unconscious and bleeding an with a neck injury.

Shevlino is accused of kicking Cairns in the face, breaking her jaw and causing her to lose consciousness momentarily, police said at the time.

The incident occurred when a fight broke out about 1 a.m. after Andresen, Shevlino, McGrath and a number of peope and the rest of the group, who all knew each other, had been drinking in Bayville for much of the day and arrived in Toms River about 11:30 p.m. They continued to drink there, at the street end by the river, police said at the time.

About 1 a.m. the acquaintances began to argue and fight, and that is when Andresen allegedly punched the McGrath, Toms River police spokesman Ralph Stocco said at the time. As Cairns tried to intervene, Shevlino allegedly punched her and threw her to the ground before kicking her in the face, Stocco said.
