Berkeley Experiences Brief Power Outage

Wednesday night's power outage likely caused by an animal getting into the substation, FirstEnergy says.

Nearly 2,000 Berkeley residents reported a brief power outage Wednesday night, according to FirstEnergy Corp. Residents lost power from 8:47 to 8:50 p.m., the energy company said.

FirstEnergy said 1,855 residents reported power loss. Electricity went out because a switch was tripped in the JCP&L Pinewald Substation, which powers Berkeley from its Route 9 and Lewis Avenue location, FirstEnergy said. FirstEnergy believes an animal — likely a bird or squirrel — tripped the switch.
