Berkeley Township Elementary School Student's Beach Drawing A Winner
Remi-Jean Christiansen honored at board of education meeting
The Berkeley Township School District's 2011-2012 calendar shows the creative work of a talented sixth-grade student - a sixth-grader who apparently had summer on her mind.
Eleven-year-old Remi-Jean Christiansen's beach scene, complete with flying kites and beach umbrellas, was chosen for the cover of this year's district calendar.
"I was so surprised," Remi said. " I didn't think I'd win."

Remi was recently honored at the board of education meeting. "I felt really proud," she said. "I didn't know I'd get an award. I just thought they'd call my name."
Remi's picture, drawn with a bright blue and yellow background, has four kites flying in the air - each containing the name of one of the district's schools. On the two beach umbrellas is written the years 2011 and 2012.

Even though the sixth-grader is such a talented artist she sees her true calling in teaching. "I want to be an elementary school teacher," she said, adding that her favorite subject is science."
Remi's mom was as surprised as she was: "I didn't even know until she started school this year and came home with the calendar. Then the principal said the district wanted to give her recognition. I'm so proud of her."
In addition to drawing and painting, in her 'spare' time Remi participates in cheerleading and gymnastics.
