Central Superintendent Resigns In Aftermath Of Student Attack, Death

BERKELEY, NJ — Central Regional School District Superintendent Triantafillos Parlapanides has officially resigned in the aftermath of the suicide of 14-year-old student Adriana Kuch.

Kuch's death, which was preceded by bullying and a filmed attack shared on social media, sparked protests at the school and in the community, with many calling for the immediate termination of district administration. Read more: 'We Want Justice': Central Students Protest After Classmate's Death

The Board of Education confirmed the resignation of Parlapanides in a statement shared to the district website Saturday.

Douglas Corbett, assistant superintendent, is acting superintendent effective immediately, the Board said. Protestors have also called for Corbett's resignation.

Additionally, the Board confirmed that an investigation into the district's response to bullying allegations has begun.

"The Central Regional School District is evaluating all current and past allegations of bullying," the Board said. "The District has contacted the Department of Education and will undergo an independent assessment of the District's anti-bullying policies and ensure every necessary safeguard is in place to protect our students and staff."

The news was shared after a vigil and balloon release was held for Kuch Saturday evening at Veterans Park.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office confirmed to NBC New York that the four students involved in the filmed attack on Kuch have been charged. One student was charged with aggravated assault, two with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and another faces a harassment charge, according to the station.
