Christie Orders Island Beach State Park Reopened For Labor Day

Check with lifeguards to see if swimming is allowed.

Gov. Chris Christie on Sunday ordered that Island Beach State Park reopen on Labor Day, after his latest briefing on the status of the storm, according to a release from his office.

Hermine is still classified as a tropical storm, but is moving further east and is expected to release little or no rain to the Jersey Shore.

But he cautioned visitors that rough surf and dangerous rip currents might mean that swimming is still forbidden.

"...but if we are going to have a sunny day, people should be able to enjoy walking or sitting on the beach," the governor said.

The park will reopen at 9 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 5., 2016.

The state will continue to monitor the status of the storm and any possible effects on New Jersey. Visitors to the park or any beaches up and down the coast should ask lifeguards whether it's safe to go into the water.
