Fugitive Wanted For Hitting Cop Car Caught In Bayville: Officials

A 55-year-old man was arrested May 15 in Bayville and taken to Ocean County Jail pending extradition proceedings.

BERKELEY, NJ — A 55-year-old man wanted on charges tied to an aggravated assault on law enforcement with a vehicle in Asheville, North Carolina, and weapons offenses in New Jersey was arrested May 15 in Bayville, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Vincent Nelson, 55, was taken into custody by members of the U.S. Marshals Service District of New Jersey and the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force. According to the U.S. Marshals Service, the arrest followed a coordinated investigation involving federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. The agency said task force members located Nelson in Bayville and arrested him without incident.

The U.S. Marshals Service said there were no injuries to officers, Nelson or members of the public. After the arrest, Nelson was transported to the Ocean County Jail for processing. He will face extradition proceedings related to the North Carolina charges, in addition to pending matters in New Jersey, according to the agency.

“This arrest highlights the strong partnerships between our law enforcement partners in North Carolina, the U.S. Marshals Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force, and the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force,” said Nicholas Ricigliano, Acting U.S. Marshal for the District of New Jersey. “Through coordinated investigative efforts and information sharing, our task forces were able to safely locate and apprehend a fugitive wanted on violent and weapons-related charges without incident.”

The U.S. Marshals Service directed the public to usmarshals.gov for more information about fugitive enforcement operations. The agency also said tips about wanted fugitives, non-compliant sex offenders or missing children can be submitted anonymously through the USMS Tips app, online at usmarshals.gov/tips, or by calling 1-877-WANTED2. The agency said the tips system allows anonymous two-way communication and accepts information 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
