Homes Evacuated After Beachwood Propane Leak: Officials

The Berkeley HAZMAT team and the Beachwood VFD burned off the propane, officials said. A road was closed and several homes evacuated.

BEACHWOOD, N.J. — A propane leak in Beachwood on Saturday required a road closure and an appearance from the Berkeley police HAZMAT team, officials said. Surf Avenue was closed for about five hours after a resident's propane tank leaked on the 900 block, Beachwood police said.

A homeowner struck a large propane tank that was buries in his hard, the Beachwood Volunteer Fire Department said. Several area homes were evacuated.

Emergency crews secured the tank to ensure no public hazard. The Berkeley HAZMAT team established a flare operation to burn off the propane tank. Units cleared at about 10 p.m. Saturday, and Surf Avenue was reopened.
