Hydraulic Fluid Washed Into Bayville Lagoon: Police

BERKELEY, NJ — A reported oil spill in the lagoon was said to not be hazardous according to officials.

Police and Bayville firefighters responded to the area of Carlyle Drive at about 8 a.m. Tuesday for the report of an oil spill in the lagoon.

A sheen was noted on the water surface, permeating throughout the area, according to officials.

The spill is believed to be hydraulic fluid that was washed into the lagoons by rainwater through the storm drains, officials said.

It's estimated that the fluid spread between Bowsprit Drive and Allen Road, officials said. It wasn't clear where the fluid came from.

The Berkeley Township Hazmat Team, the New Jersey State Police Marine Unit and the Department of Environmental Protection were all advised. The presence of the fluid is not deemed a hazard at this time, according to officials.
