Joe Fisher, of Middletown, passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, a result of a long struggle with Type I Diabetes.
He was a lifelong newspaper man and had retired in 2010 after 17 years as an editor at the Star-Ledger in Newark. Joe was born in Passaic on April 15, 1957 and grew up in Denville graduating from Morris Knolls High School in 1975. Upon graduation, he immediately pursued his childhood dream of being a news writer, starting out as a stringer at the Daily Advance, and eventually as a reporter for the Daily Record, the New Jersey Herald, the Bergen Record, the Asbury Park Press, and then as an editor at the Ocean County Observer and the Star-Ledger.
After his retirement, he wrote occasionally for the Asbury Park Press and received his degree in Media Studies from Brookdale Community College in 2012. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge, helped out at the Middletown Historical Society and was always available to give a hand when needed on local film shoots.
Joe was gregarious and made friends easily. He enjoyed music, nature, birdwatching, hiking, traveling and Friday afternoons with his friends at the Dublin House. He loved taking road trips with his brother Danny. In his retirement, he was able to pursue his interest in the Fisher family genealogy, and made frequent trips to Ireland and England in search of information. He was proud of his Irish Quaker roots.
He was predeceased in 2011 by his parents, Joseph and Jo Mae Fisher of Branchville. He is survived by his loving wife, Robin McMahon and his four beloved cats. He also leaves behind his sister and brother-in-law, Daryn and John Cashin of Swartswood Lake; his brother, Danny of Lafayette; his mother and father-in-law, Mickey and Charlie McMahon of Toms River; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Cris, Tom, Chuck, Scott, Amy, Lisa and Chris. He also leaves nine nieces and nephews, a great-niece and a great-nephew, his aunts, uncles, cousins and the countless friends he made in his travels. He will be greatly missed by all. May the road rise to meet you, our dearest Joey.
There will be a memorial service in Joey’s memory from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 21, 2015 at the Evergreen Memorial Funeral Home, 1735 Rt. 35, Middletown. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Diabetes Association PO Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312 or the Monmouth County SPCA, 260 Wall St., Eatontown, NJ 07724 would be appreciated.
