Bernardsville Art Gallery Honors Wildlife Artist Douglas Allen

Join us for a St. Patrick's Day Weekend Artist Reception this Sunday March 13, 2022, 2-4pm. "The Wild Bunch, North American & African Wildlife By Douglas Allen, Oil Paintings & Drawings is Studio 7 Fine Art Gallery's newest exhibit. The show has been extended by popular demand, and the public is welcome to visit during studio hours now through April 23, 2022.

Living Legend
In 2018, at The American Masters Exhibition, the Salmagundi Club in New York City paid tribute to eight artists as Living Legends who have been torchbearers for representational and realist art for decades. Douglas Allen, received the Living Legend Lifetime Achievement Award along with Max Ginsburg, Everett Raymond Kinstler. Burton Silverman and others. Allen has served on the board of the Society of Animal Artists, is a founder of Wildlife Artists, Inc and has taught extensively. He is a local treasure, living in our own backyard in Hunterdon County, New Jersey.

Artist and Author
Having collected the works of N. C. Wyeth for many years, in 1972 Doug co-authored with his father, the book “N. C. Wyeth, The Collected Paintings, Illustrations and Murals.” He is currently working to establish an N.C. Wyeth Museum near Needham, Massachusetts. His involvement includes designing stained glass windows for the museum. In 2019 Allen’s one-man show hung at the Brandywine River Museum alongside a retrospect on N. C. Wyeth.
Additionally, he has written numerous articles about artists: Carl Rungius, Charles Livingston Bull, Philip R. Goodwin, Frederic Remington, Charles Russell, A.B. Frost.

Wildlife and Landscape Artist
Allen has always felt that in wildlife painting, the land- scape must be as important as the animal subject which is depicted. He continues to travel to the wilderness areas to accurately capture the moods, attitudes and feelings of his subjects.

Museum Representation
Doug’s paintings are represented in the collections of The National Museum of Wildlife Art, Jackson, WY; the Glenbow Museum, Alberta, Canada; Brandywine River Museum, Chadds Ford, PA; and the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum, Oradell, NJ, as well as many corporate headquarters including Johnson & Johnson, Crum & Foster Insurance, PNC Bank and fine homes across the country.
A retrospective of his work, 1945 to 1995, was held at the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum in Oradell, New Jersey in October, 1995. One of his commission works, for the National Museum of Wildlife Art, is a painting of artist Carl Rungius working in the field.

Douglas Allen was born in Jersey City, NJ in 1935. During his teenage years he spent his free time his drawing the animals at the Central Park and Bronx Zoos. He was encouraged by his father who collected works by Frederic Remmington. He studied under W. J. Aylward (Howard Pyle pupil) at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts. Through his father, he met and studied with Paul Bransom in Jackson, WY. Over the years his work has been influenced by artists he has admired such as Howard Pyle, N. C. Wyeth, W. R. Leigh, Carl Rungius and Frederic Remington.
Doug’s art career began at 24, as an illustrator of big game animals for magazines and books. His paintings and drawings appeared in numerous periodicals such as Outdoor Life, Sports Afield and the Reader’s Digest. Notable books he illustrated are Jack O’Connor’s “The Big Game Animals of North America”, Clyde Ormond’s, “The Complete Book of Hunting”. Collectively his illustrations have appeared in over thirty-five books. Original artwork and Giclee prints available.
