Saturday Samplers Book Group to Discuss "The Handmaid's Tale"
Best-selling fable set in the near future in the Republic of Gilead, a fundamentalist regime in what used to be part of the United States.

Bernardsville Library’s book group, Saturday Samplers, will meet on Saturday, June 2 at 11:00 am to discuss "The Handmaid's Tale" (1985) by Canadian author Margaret Atwood.
"The Handmaid's Tale" is a fable set in the near future in the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what used to be part of the United States. Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, and is faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate. In a desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. One of these women, Offred, is determined to survive the terrifying world she lives in, and find the daughter that was taken from her.
Christopher Lehmann-Haupt of The New York Times wrote that the book is, "among other things…a political tract deploring nuclear energy, environmental waste and antifeminist attitudes...[as well as] a taut thriller, a psychological study and a play on words."
