Avoid the "Summer Slide" with Tutors

Local learning centers such as Learning Press in Manasquan can help students retain and advance their learning over the summer.

Avoid The “Summer Slide” With Tutoring

MANASQUAN -- Avoiding the “summer slide” begins now by choosing a summer reading program for your child. Registration is now open at Learning Press LLC, 2679 Hwy.70 in Manasquan, for students aged pre-K to eighth grade who need specialized reading instruction, or enrichment tutoring to prepare them for the next grade.

Mary Beth D’Antoni, owner of Learning Press LLC, said the “summer slide” is what many students experience when learning suddenly ends with the June school year in the gap before the next grade begins in September. A summer program can prove extremely successful for a student in retaining knowledge, advancing their skills and deepening their understanding.

Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nation's oldest and largest children's literacy organization, believes there is no better time than the summer to begin helping our children bridge the gap in learning between the end of one school year and the beginning of the next one. Experts agree that children who have reading instruction during the summer gain reading skills, while those who do not often slide backward.

Learning Press LLC offers individualized tutoring throughout the summer along with summer group programs.

Registration is now open at learningpressllc.com/summer-sessions.html.

Sign up for grade- and age-specific sessions, meeting once a week for five weeks. Two start dates are available, June 26 or July 31. “In this program, your child will learn to read independently and will develop the skills and confidence to make reading a big success.”

Summer SAT Instruction

If the SAT test is in your teen’s horizon, summer is also a great time to focus on the skills needed for the standardized college preparation test. “Students who prepare for an exam learn time-saving techniques, discover how to spot incorrect answers with ease, build stamina, and are generally more relaxed, poised, and in command of the material on test day,” D’Antoni said.

The college board has added a new SAT test date on August 26. This will afford students the opportunity to prepare and take the exam before the beginning of the school year.

All Summer exam courses will prepare for the August and October SAT, and the September ACT.

Learning Press LLC offers an eight-week program of 2 hour-sessions as part of its SAT prep series, meeting Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting in July.
