Congrats to My Favorite Grad.

As 2024 rolls around for local graduates, its great to see that the days of covid past has not hampered their enthusiasm, desire and hard work that prepares them for their journey into the real world. 2024 Grads feel this more than most because 4 years ago they lost their chances at graduation, and that lack of celebration could have had some long lasting repercussions on the students.

I would like to congratulate all the grads, but in particular I would love to recognize a very special one. Kaitlyn DiDia, my niece and Goddaughter who attends Donovan in Toms River. Now before you dismiss the article as just another proud uncle who is going to embellish his niece, you have to understand a little of her (and My)history. Most people learn from their elders, well this child taught her elders.

When Kaitlyn was born, she was this beautiful little girl who made you melt when you held her. She was absolutely perfect. There was not a thing you couldn't love about this kid. She was not without issues however as we soon found out when she failed her hearing tests. See in my family I was the lone kid growing up who suffered from hearing loss. I had no one around to guide me, to mentor me, or to make me realize that the world would be different for me. It broke my heart, and I mean hard, that she has a hearing problem and would require hearing aids. I had it rough, in so many ways, and I was determined that she woudn't experience that as long as I was around.

Something funny happened though. She didn't need me. I needed her. She taught me about overcoming adversity, setting your goals, determining your worth, and even about the ONLY limitations you face in life are the ones you put up on you. All of this before she even hit 18.

Even with her limitations, she managed to letter in a variety of sports, maintain A's, work towards her dream schools, (14 of them) and get accepted at all of them, along with offers of financial assistance and scholarships despite FAFSA being screwed up. She will be studying sports management and I already feel sorry for the individuals who she comes across who might perceive her as being weak or anything less deserving. Keep an eye on this young lady, she will be shattering some glass ceilings. In a world of entitled feelings and participation trophies, This young woman will set the bar high.
