Fatal Route 35 Hit-And-Run In Ocean County Leads To Arrest Of Middlesex County Man
The man is accused of leaving the scene after hitting a woman on the Route 35 shoulder on Saturday morning, authorities said.

BRICK, NJ — A Middlesex County man has been charged in a hit-and-run crash that killed a woman on Route 35 in Brick Township, authorities said Monday.
Mark D. Carey Jr., 19, of South Amboy, was arrested Sunday at his home in South Amboy, a joint news release from Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer and Brick Township Police Chief David Forrester said.
He has been charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in the death of another in the Saturday morning crash on Route 35 south near Bay Boulevard, authorites said.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the woman who was killed.
Carey also has been charged with the following motor vehicle offenses in connection with the crash: leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in serious bodily injury or death, failing to report an accident, reckless driving, careless driving, and failure to maintain lane of travel, authorities said.

Brick police were called to Route 35 about 9:15 a.m. Saturday for the report of the crash, and found the woman had been hit while she was on the shoulder of the road, authorities said. She was taken to Ocean University Medical Center in Brick, where she was pronounced dead, authorities said.
The vehicle had fled the scene.
The investigation determined it was a 1999 Ford Explorer registered to Carey, authorities said, and additional investigation found Carey was driving at the time of the crash, authorities said.
He is being held at the Ocean County Jail in Toms River pending a detention hearing.
