10-Acre Wildfire Under Investigation In Brick: State Officials

The smoke was being smelled in several parts of town, according to social media posts.

BRICK, NJ -- A 10-acre wildfire that sent smoke through much of Brick Township is under investigation, state officials said Monday afternoon.

Caryn Shinske, a spokesperson with the state Department of Environmental Protection, said the fire at the Manasquan Wildlife Management Area was contained by firefighters. The cause is not yet known.

Dry conditions have the state Forest Fire Service warning residents of much of the state to be careful as the risk of wildfires is high right now.

Though Brick Township officials sent a Nixle alert attributing the smoke to a controlled burn, Shinske said that was not the case.

"The fire itself was not a prescribed burn," she said. "Prescribed burn season concluded on April 10."
