Where's Mary Lee The Shark? Follow Her Jersey Shore Journey

The 17-foot great white with the Twitter account has been popping up at various spots. See video of her tagging nearly five years ago.

If you're like any of the more than 115,000 Twitter users who follow Mary Lee, the massive great white shark that has become a celebrity, you've probably been checking in to see where she's popping up — literally.

The great white tagged in September 2012 with a satellite tag by the OCEARCH research organization has drawn almost as much attention each spring as April the giraffe did in the final months of her pregnancy earlier this year.

But, like most of the working world, it's a little difficult to check on her constantly. Because the satellite tag only registers activity when Mary Lee rises to the ocean's surface, it's hard to keep tabs on her every move.

The shark, named for the mother of OCEARCH researcher Chris Fischer, has been very active off the New Jersey coast since she arrived in Cape May Memorial Day weekend. Beginning with a ping at 9:55 a.m. on May 27 in the Atlantic in the area between New Jersey and Delaware, Mary Lee's transmitter has pinged the satellite 35 times as of Monday afternoon, according to the OCEARCH shark tracker.

She didn't stay long in Cape May, apparently checking out the view of the lighthouse from offshore before moving on. From there, she headed north toward Atlantic City, gambling that she would be able to grab a bite to eat along the way.

On Saturday, she surfaced off Belmar, apparently hoping to catch the bands at Bar Anticipation that night. She tweeted that she was particularly curious about the Shark River she'd heard so much about.

But rather than continuing to head north, she apparently decided she needed a beach day, pinging very close to the beach in Seaside Park and Island Beach State Park — the closest she's been to shore so far this visit — on Sunday before moving on to Long Beach Island Monday.

Her stop in Harvey Cedars and Ship Bottom prompted a little levity from the police in those towns:

Chances are the great white, which OCEARCH estimates is 17 feet long and more than 4,000 pounds now, is following schools of striped bass and bluefish, which are off the New Jersey coast right now.

Cisco, the juvenile male great white that pinged near Mary Lee while she was in the Cape May area, pinged on Tuesday and again on Sunday afternoon, but OCEARCH said that both times he didn't surface long enough to give away his location.

Where will Mary Lee go next? Only the shark knows. But we'll keep following her path on the OCEARCH site, just as thee organization has for five years since tagging her. Check out the video of the tagging here.
