2 Charged With Animal Cruelty After Abandoning Dog On Bound Brook Road: Police

A car pulled over and left the dog on the side of the road earlier this month, said police.

BOUND BROOK, NJ — Two Bound Brook residents were charged after a dog was abandoned on the side of the road earlier this month.

Timisha Smith-Powell, 27, Bound Brook, and Yusan Powell, 26, Bound Brook, were charged with animal cruelty and disorderly conduct, said Bound Brook Police Sgt. Robert Pikulin.

Officers were told that a dark-colored vehicle (Ford Escape) pulled to the side of the road to let the dog loose.

The investigation led by the Bound Brook Police Department’s Humane Law Enforcement Officer, Patrolman Phil Gatti, found that Smith-Powell and Powell put the dog in the back of their vehicle before leaving their home.

A short time later, the vehicle pulled to the side of the road and the rear passenger door was opened by the driver of the vehicle. The dog was led out of the vehicle before it pulled away, said Pikulin.

Additionally, both Smith-Powell and Powell were charged with the following Borough Ordinance Violations:

  • Dog Running at Large
  • Dog Not on Leash
  • Failure to Have Dog Registered
  • Abandonment of Personal Property
  • Interference with a Boro Official

"The dog was seen by a vet and is being held at a local veterinary hospital and is being well cared for pending the outcome of the case," said Pikulin.

No other information can be disclosed about the dog as the investigation is ongoing, said Pikulin.
