Driver Ran Red Light In Route 22 Crash Sending 4 To Hospital In Somerset County: Police

North Plainfield Firefighters had to rescue two people trapped in their SUV following the crash on Monday night.

NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ — A driver ran a red light, made an illegal left turn to cross Route 22, and crashed into another vehicle, sending four people to the hospital on Monday night, according to a North Plainfield Police report.

Just before 10 p.m., a 20-year-old North Plainfield woman was driving a Ford Explorer on Route 22 East when it crashed into a Nissan Xterra, driven by a 50-year-old woman from Staten Island.

The Xterra made an illegal left turn, ran a red light at Wilson Avenue to cross the highway before hitting the Explorer, according to a witness and the driver of the Explorer.

The crash propelled the Xterra into the westbound lanes of the highway, according to the police report.

The North Plainfield Fire Department was called to rescue the trapped driver and passenger in the Xterra.

Crews stabilized the vehicle and were able to rescue the victims within five minutes, according to the fire department.

Four people were treated on scene by firefighters and EMTs before being taken to Robert Wood Johnson New Brunswick for further medical attention.
