Fire Ignites At RWJ Cancer Treatment Center In Somerville On Mother's Day
Quick actions by a hospital employee and volunteer firefighters helped to contain the fire on Sunday.
SOMERVILLE, NJ — A fire broke out on the roof of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset's Steeplechase Cancer Center on Sunday morning.
Somerville Fire Department was called out and found the fire in the center of the roof burning in an around 20x20 area under an air chiller unit, said the fire department.
Firefighters worked for around "two hours holding the fire to the roof area and underlayment. Water damage was mitigated to a portion of the third and second floor," according to the fire department.

The fire "was quickly contained thanks to the quick actions of an employee and response from the Somerville Fire Department," said RWJ University Hospital Somerset Spokeswoman Kathleen Roberts.
The hospital staff assessed the water damage to the second and third floors and were prepared to resume normal operations on Monday.

Along with Somerville, several nearby volunteer fire departments also came to help, including Finderne, Raritan, and Manville.
