Caty Backfisch – Trailblazing Paths: Mount Alumnae Inspiring Futures

What a week for Caty Backfisch ’21! From her days at Mount St. Dominic Academy to an impressive path of academic achievement and influential internships, Caty returned in January to share invaluable lessons with current students. On Monday, she inspired Dr. Tornyova’s Capstone class with her project on the “Intersection of Gender and Age in Voting.

“I loved watching Caty share her insights with my Capstone students,” said Dr. Tornyova. “Her story helped them see the potential of their research beyond high school, as well as the wide range of applications for the skills they’re developing. Caty’s curiosity, dedication, and endless positive energy were truly inspiring. It was magical to witness her growth into such a confident and accomplished young woman. I can’t wait to see what’s next for her!”

By Tuesday, Caty was engaging with Mr. Vigil’s AP Government class, recounting her experiences as a federal court intern, a congressional staffer, and a researcher in Washington, D.C.

“Caty was a high-achieving student in my class for three years. It’s so great to see our graduates not only succeeding but also giving back to their Mount sisters. I have no doubt that Caty will do remarkable things in the near future. You might even find her on the shortlist for the Supreme Court,” said Mr. Vigil.

Now in her final year at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., where she majors in political science with a concentration in peace and conflict studies, Caty has built an impressive resume. She interned for a judge in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, gaining firsthand insight into federal trial proceedings. In Congressman Jim McGovern's Worcester, Mass., district office, she helped residents navigate federal agencies and conducted policy research. At the Supreme Court of the United States, she worked in the Office of the Clerk, managing filings for high-profile cases and observing the nation’s highest court in action. Most recently, Caty interned in Senator Cory Booker’s Newark office, engaging in constituent services and supporting legislative and community-focused projects.

Caty’s story is one of academic excellence and practical wisdom, which she eagerly shared with Mount students. She encouraged them to start early, apply broadly, and embrace every experience as a learning opportunity. “Some of the best opportunities come from exploring outside your comfort zone,” she advised. Caty also emphasized the power of networking: “Reach out to people, even for a 15-minute conversation. Most people want to help and share their experiences.”

Her visit exemplified the Mount’s enduring commitment to empowering young women to pursue their dreams. As she put it, “Don’t be afraid to stand out. The things that make you unique are your greatest strengths.”
