Police Captain Turned Crossing Guard Is No Longer At Caldwell Corner; Here's Why

A police captain who became a crossing guard in Caldwell is no longer at the corner, as of last week.

CALDWELL, NJ — Consider the crossing guard. If things get quiet at work, they can't sit at a desk and look up cover versions of "Paradise by the Dashboard Light." They're on their feet, watching at every turn to make sure a child's future isn't ended by an errant driver.

It's important work, and often done with a smile.

But last week, one of those valued community members hung up his uniform.

"Thank you to crossing guard (Retired Caldwell Police Captain) Joe DeBellis for his seven years of service to the Caldwell Community!" wrote the Caldwell police on Thursday. "As many know, Joe is a pillar to our community and was a dedicated Caldwell police captain and has today retired as the crossing guard at Thomas and Westville Avenue."

The police noted, "Crossing guards work through all conditions outside to cross the children day in and day out. Thank you Joe for your many years of dedicated service to Caldwell and we wish you a healthy and happy retirement!"

"From one of the old Caldwell kids," wrote a Facebook commenter, "great job Joe I know my parents loved you. Hope your retirement is all you wish it to be."

"Thank you Joe for crossing my son for all those years and trading Hudson county stories with me," wrote another. DeBellis graduated from high school in Jersey City.

DeBellis, who also served on the Town Council, began working for the town in 1974.
