CHARITY KNITTERS PAY IT FORWARD

The Nifty Knitters from the Senior Center of the Chathams reported its statistics for 2013. The group of over 30 women and one gentleman have knitted 828 hats for the newborns at Overlook and Trinitas Hospitals and caps and shawls for chemotherapy patients at Overlook. Plus 155 blankets donated to the patients at Lyons Veterans Hospital.

Bea Makara, Chatham Township, joined the group 10 years ago when she retired. “It’s very relaxing to get together and knit with the ladies,” she says.  “And it feels good to help someone else whether it’s a cancer patient, a newborn or a veteran.”

The group meets every Wednesday at 1 o’clock at the Senior Center in the Chatham Township Municipal building to knit, socialize and count up their weekly accomplishments.

New knitters are always welcome to join or stop by to see the many busy hands at work. They would especially welcome other gentlemen to join the group. Many of the contributions are knitted at home.

The knitters accept donations of baby or worsted yarn for their projects. Please no wool! Donations can be dropped off at the Senior Center in the Chatham Township Municipal building, lower level. For further information, please call the Center at 973-635-4565.
