This weekend Chatham High School hosted the “Flashback to the Pirate Days” robotics event for FIRST® Tech Challenge.  The CHS Robotics team, Fear the Gear, invited 13 regional robotics teams from the tri-state area to compete.  Each team had 3 weeks to build and program a robot that could complete different pirate-themed tasks - moving barrels of rum to a treasure island, or exploding the other team’s points with dynamite - and earn points that would lead to a victory.

“Overall it was a great competition,” says Jack Lynch, captain of the Fear the Gear team, “It was fantastic to have so many people come to an event purely for fun.”  The event at the Chatham High School was part of the FIRST® Tech Challenge, which comprises teams from grades 8-12, consisting of 4-10 students each.

Because the league model is based on traditional sports, most teams have coaches and are very competitive.  However, unlike traditional sports, teams are extremely willing to help other teams.  All teams have had experience in helping other teams writing code or borrowing parts during competitions.  Students get to combine what they learn in the classroom, from classes like math, science and computer science, with problem solving, building machines, to developing a productive team environment.
