Chatham Schools Recognize Mental Health Awareness Month

Chatham students are participating in a slate of events to reinforce healthy coping skills.

CHATHAM, NJ - May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, and the Student Assistance Counselors (SACs) at both Chatham High School and Middle School put together a calendar of events for students to participate in to raise awareness about mental health.

According to officials, the purpose of these events has been to reinforce more healthy ways that students can cope with challenging situations, people, or emotions by increasing their resiliency.

Some of the activities students have been encouraged to participate in include the following:

  • making stress balls
  • learning about pet therapy, dogs included Stella and Savannah, as well as Tucker from Creature Comfort
  • making a gratitude wall
  • creating lava beads with essential oils
  • participating in aromatherapy workshops, yoga, and guided meditation.

One day, The Juice House brought juice samples and acai bowls to promote healthy nutrition. Another day, students watched a mental health related movie. Guest speakers from Minding Your Mind and New Hope Integrated Behavioral Health Care also addressed students.
