Chatham Students Hold Read-A-Thon for Hurricane Maria Victims

The students spent over 400,000 minutes reading in order to raise money for a storm-damaged school.

CHATHAM, NJ — Students at Lafayette School raised over $8,000 for victims of Hurricane Maria in a read-a-thon last week.

Fourth and fifth grade students read thousands of books to help raise the funds, which will go towards rebuilding the Jose Santo Quinones School in Canovanes, Puerto Rico. The school was destroyed during the Sept. 2017 hurricane.

In total, students read over 3,9000 books over 432,000 minutes, and raised $8,338 in the read-a-thon, which was sponsored by the PTO.

"The Read A Thon is always inspiring. When I announced this year during our assembly that we would be donating some of the money raised to students in Puerto Rico, the students went wild," said Cheryl Russo, Lafayette School Principal. "They were really impacted by the pictures we shared of their library and surrounding areas. All they wanted to do was help. I am amazed by the generosity of the community to help support students in other communities."
