D.J. Crater Closing In Chatham

After 34 years, the clothing store will be closing its doors for the last time.

CHATHAM, NJ — After 34 years in downtown Chatham, clothing store d.j. crater is closing at the end of the year.

"After thirty four wonderful years of owning d.j. crater Rich and I have decided to retire and will be closing our store by December 31. Chatham has been our home for forty five years and will continue to remain so," owner Doris Crater wrote in an online announcement.

The store was first located at 242 Main Street. 19 years later, the Craters purchased 250 Main Street, where the store has been since.

The family thanked all of their regular customers, whom they credited for the store's success.

"d.j. crater became successful because you have supported us for thirty four years. You have made us your place to come to wardrobe, buy gifts or to just stop by for a visit," they wrote, "I feel privileged to have known all of you and I thank you for being a part of my dream. Over the years we have always had the most dedicated and caring staff. Together we were a family and d.j. crater flourished."

The business began in the Crater's basement, where Doris would personalize beach towels and tennis skirts for her daughter Kim and herself. It currently sells women's clothing and accessories made by a variety of designers. Doris handed the store over to Kim four years ago, who has been managing the store.
