European Deli Coming to Main Street

The owners hope The European Market will be open by early September.

A Polish deli that will sell prepared foods such as kielbasa, stuffed cabbage and fresh bread will soon be coming to Main Street.

The deli will be called The European Market. On Wednesday, the Chatham Borough Planning Board approved a change in permitted use for the property where it will be located. The space was previously occupied by the Pascarella tailor shop, which moved around the corner to a spot on South Passaic Avenune.

The move clears the way for the store to open at 247 Main St., next to A Taste of Asia. Its owner, Kathy Korab, said she hopes it will be open by early September.

Korab, who is a hairdresser at Les Cheveux Salon, said the idea for the deli came from one of her customers there who had injured themselves in January and had been laid up in the hospital.

Korab prepared her stuffed cabbage to eat while she was there. It was so good, the customer said, that Korab should consider opening a store that sells such foods.

"That's how the whole idea started in my head," she said at the Planning Board meeting.

She said the store will have a rustic feel. It will not prepare any foods on site, and will not have tables where people can sit and eat. It will be more of a market than anything else.

The store will also sell pierogies and Polish sweets.
