Solidarity Sleepout on October 8th

Join the Youth Interfaith Council for a Solidarity Sleepout on October 8th and 9th to raise awareness for homeless youth in our area.

On October 8th and 9th, the Youth Interfaith Council will be hosting a “Solidarity Sleepout” to raise awareness and promote advocacy for children and teenagers who are experiencing homelessness.

The goal of this event is to simulate one night of homelessness. Participants will have to carry everything they bring with them, including a sleeping bag and will have limited access to their phones, and food. Hopefully, this event will show students how frustrating and difficult it is to be a teenager experiencing homelessness.

Participants will be spending the night walking from church to church, participate in a different activity at each church. The event will end at Corpus Christi Church where participants will spend the night sleeping on the lawn.

The event will feature speakers from Family Promise and the New Jersey Coalition Against Human Trafficking and will support these organizations, as well as Bridges Outreach. We are also working with Chatham High School Homeless Solutions Club.

The event is non-denominational and open to all students from 8th-12th grade. Students in 6th and 7th grade are also welcome but require an adult chaperone. There is also an option to leave at midnight and skip the actual sleep out. This event may not be suitable for students younger than 6th grade due to the heavy subject matter and open discussion on issues affecting homeless youth, including sex and labor trafficking. There is suggested donation of $20, which will provide supplies for the event and donations to our partner organizations.
