$180M Investment In South Jersey Part Of 2023 State Budget, Gov. Murphy Says

Some of the funding supports the development of affordable housing, making neighborhoods safer and road improvements, the Governor said.

CAMDEN, NJ — The state's fiscal year 2023 budget includes $180 million in funding for the city of Camden, putting the area in good shape for the future, local and state leaders said Wednesday.

"The budget that I signed a month ago reaches out a hand to the city of Camden, both directly as well as throughout the Camden County ... and its local government partners," Murphy said during a speech at Camden City Council Chambers.

The governor pointed out specific examples of what the $180 million is earmarked for:

  • advancing development and construction of "safe and affordable places for families to call home"
  • making improvements to pedestrian walkways
  • improving the lives of the homeless
  • supporting police departments in their efforts to make neighborhoods safer
  • buying new public works equipment, which in turn will be used to improve roads, sewer and water infrastructure
  • removing illegal trash dumps
  • making stores' facades and signage more attractive
  • modernizing the Walter Rand Transportation Center

"This is much more than the annual state aid," Murphy said. "This is money Camden could take to the bank today to reach for that better tomorrow."

Camden County Commissioner Lou Cappelli, Jr. assured the Governor and everyone else that the funds would be allocated to resources that put the city of Camden on the right path.

"This historic investment in Canton city will have a positive and meaningful impact on the quality of life of the residents of this city for years to come," he said.
