Alzheimer's Association Volunteer Spotlight: Ron Enfield

The Alzheimer's Association Greater New Jersey Chapter, the leading volunteer-driven voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's care, support, advocacy and research is spotlighting people who make a difference in the fight to end Alzheimer's and all other dementia especially in April – National Volunteers Month. Today we say "thank you" to Ron Enfield, a former caregiver to his wife, Diane, volunteer support group facilitator both virtually and in-person at the Presbyterian Church in Cherry Hill, NJ, and author of Incorrigible, the story of their life together, and the enthusiastic, loving woman Diane was until dementia devastated her. Ron will also share his story as a featured speaker at New Jersey’s Virtual State Advocacy Day on April 12, from 9-10:30 a.m., where attendees will hear directly from key legislators, influential state leaders, and other Alzheimer’s Association volunteer advocates using their voices to advocate for state policy change that will improve the lives of all those impacted by dementia. “Ron has done an amazing job to make a difference in New Jersey. His experience as a caregiver to his wife, his empathy for those who are living with dementia and his commitment to honoring Diane’s memory by helping others on the journey, exemplifies him as a leader that stands out among volunteers. During the pandemic, Ron quickly transitioned his weekly Support Group meetings to virtual meetings online. We greatly appreciate him volunteering with our organization and the vital role he plays in supporting New Jerseyans living with Alzheimer’s and their care partners,” said Mary Beth Lewis, Program Manager, Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter.

Ron explains, “I cared for Diane at home until dementia gradually erased her passion, drive, and personality, and finally ended her life. After her passing, I started writing my book, and I began to reflect on the past and the future. I began to look for ways to connect with the community again. Until a cure for Alzheimer’s is found, I will continue to focus my efforts on supporting and educating those impacted by this horrible disease."
