Bike Thefts On The Rise Again In Cherry Hill - Tips On Keeping Yours

CHERRY HILL, NJ — An increase in bike thefts has occurred in Cherry Hill during the past few weeks, police in that municipality said.

A similar increase was reported in May by the same police department.

The police offered these tips to keep your bike from being stolen:

  • Lock your bike each and every time you are leaving it alone, no matter how long or short of time you will be away from it.
  • Bring your (or your kid's) bike in for the night; do not leave it on your porch or driveway.
  • Obtain a serial number for your bike (if it does not already have one) and then record the number with your local police department.

The problem of bike theft is not limited to Cherry Hill, apparently.

NPR has previously reported that there has been a likely-pandemic-inspired uptick in bike thefts in recent years.

The NPR report, citing the Denver Police Department, also noted that stolen bikes are rarely retrieved since they are either resold quickly and/or that the original owner did not obtain a serial number for the bike and then record that number.
