MARLTON, NJ — A former superintendent and principal in South Jersey is using his years of experience to connect with kids and relay life lessons as the co-author and illustrator of a new book releasing on Friday.

On the surface, "Vesta on a Vespa" is an underdog story involving a cat and a turtle, two unusual acquaintances that find themselves at the center of a teaching moment highlighting empathy towards others.

"The story is about friendship, kindness, acceptance, and realizing that kindness is actually your superpower," co-author Brian Betze told Patch.

In the tale, Vesta, named after Betze's actual cat, finds herself on a quest to reach her coveted snack ball, but has a run-in with a turtle along the way.

Through the story, kids see Vesta learn what it means to put others above herself, a core message Betze said there is no shortage of in his hometown.

"Having lived in Marlton for nearly 30 years and spent so much of my time working in the Cherry Hill area, what stands out to me most is the genuine kindness of the people and the friendships I've built along the way. There's a real sense of community here," he added.

Betze retired 18 months ago as the Superintendent of Robbinsville Public Schools after serving as superintendent in Jamesburg, Moorestown, and Berlin Township.

He was also a principal in Cherry Hill and began his career in education as a middle and high school art teacher.

"Having been a public educator for 40 years, I know how meaningful it is to teach our younger generations about kindness, friendship, and always trying to do the right thing, regardless of the circumstances," Betze added.

He and his co-author, Cheryl Barbagallo, say love for their local communities shine right through their furry friend and onto the pages of "Vesta on a Vespa."

"We are both big fans of keeping things local," said Betze, who gets inspiration for stories along local walking trails and sitting at places like Lakes Coffee.
