Amazon To Open 1 Million Square Foot Warehouse In South Jersey

Amazon invests big in New Jersey: They just opened a warehouse in Carteret and will open three more, in Edison, Cranbury and Logan Township.

LOGAN TOWNSHIP, NJ — Amazon announced plans on Friday to open a 1 million square foot fulfillment center in Logan Township, Gloucester County. It will pack and ship larger items, such as patio furniture, sports equipment and music equipment. When it opens, its size will equal that of the center in Carteret, Middlesex County, which is currently the largest in the state.

The Carteret center just opened, and will serve as Amazon's main hub in the mid-Atlantic region; from there they will pack and ship items all throughout the region, to New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. It employs 2,000 people. Warehouses will also open in Edison and Cranbury, and will create more than 2,500 new, full-time jobs, according a report on NJ.com.

The news means Amazon is greatly expanding its footprint in New Jersey and views New Jersey as a main artery to quickly deliver items all over the mid-Atlantic market. Amazon has long operated a warehouse in Avenel and another in Robbinsville. Last year, Patch reported how the Robbinsville warehouse was fined by OSHA for workplace safety violations. Amazon failed to report 26 work-related illnesses and injuries that occurred at the warehouse last year, the federal agency said. Amazon said they were contesting the citation.

At the Carteret center, robots fetch items and bring them to workers; otherwise workers would have to walk the length of a football field to retrieve the products, NJ.com reported.

Both the Cranbury Township and Edison centers will be slightly smaller, at 900,000 square feet and will process smaller items, such as books, toys and kitchen items.
