Gov. Chris Christie campaigned for Donald Trump on Monday, opting not to attend the funeral of a New Jersey state trooper who was killed last week.

The governor's office, responding to a request from Patch, said they would look into the governor's reasons for deciding not attend the funeral of Sean Cullen, 31, who was killed by a car during a traffic stop. He leaves behind his fiancée and baby boy.

The Cullen Mass was to begin at noon at Saint Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church in Cinnaminson. Cullen will be laid to rest at Lakeview Memorial Park in Cinnaminson after the services. Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno was to attend the funeral.

NJ Advance media reported that the 2016 presidential contest has caused Christie to miss three New Jersey police funerals in a row. Christie missed the funeral services of Port Authority police officer Eamonn Mautone in January, as well as the December 2015 memorial of New Jersey State Police trooper Eli McCarson.

The candidate Christie is supporting could be having troubles of his own. Investigators in North Carolina are considering charging Trump with inciting a riot after a protester at one of his rallies was sucker-punched by a supporter, according to a report from WRAL. The report appeared under a web headline, "Latest: Cumberland authorities weigh charging Trump following rally violence."

Christie held a press conference on Mar. 3 to say that he would not be full-time backer of Trump, even though he has drawn ridicule for his somewhat frequent appearances on the campaign trail for the billionaire developer.
