Jewish Holidays Will Remain Off Cinnaminson School Calendar In 2017-18 School Year

The holidays were first taken off the calendar this school year due to the "shrinking Jewish population and the growing Muslim population."

CINNAMINSON, NJ — For the second school year in a row, Jewish holidays will be excluded from the Cinnaminson School District’s calendar, the Burlington County Times reports.

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur were removed from the district calendar for the first time during the 2016-17 school year and remain off the calendar for the 2017-18 school year, according to the report.

The school district previously said the decision to remove the days from the district’s holiday calendar after 40 years is the result of a “significant reduction in the Jewish population and the rise of the populations of other religions,” particularly the Muslim religion.

Superintendent Salvatore J. Illuzi also said Christmas and Good Friday are days off because they are government/religious holidays. Jewish holidays are just religious holidays, and the Jewish and Muslim populations are now equal in the district.
