A New Jersey mayor has decided to enter a substance abuse rehabilitation facility after a video was released of him failing four field sobriety tests, and admitting that he drank five beers at a South Jersey strip club.

“Recent events have made it clear to me that I can no longer deny that I have a problem for which I must take full responsibility,” he wrote on the town’s Facebook page. “On Friday, I will enter a rehabilitation facility to seek the help and counseling I need to move forward. I recognize the hurt that I have caused my family and friends.

“I am committed to not only getting better, but making myself a better person. For the benefit of my family, especially my children, I ask that our privacy be respected during this time,” he wrote. “I also apologize to the residents of Lambertville for the way in which my behavior has reflected upon our city.”

DelVecchio told the officer he had five “Redd’s Apple Ales” at the Playhouse Lounge, a strip club in Burlington City, after arriving at the establishment at 7:30 p.m. The traffic stop was around 1:10, both the officer and the mayor said on the video.

The video of the Nov. 9 arrest was obtained by The Times of Trenton through an Open Public Records Act request. DelVecchio has since had the drunken driving charge dropped, pleading guilty to charges of reckless driving and failing to maintain a lane of travel.

In the video, the officer asks the mayor to step out of the vehicle want to run a few tests. “You OK?” the officer asks.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” DelVecchio said. The mayor goes on to plead his case, saying: ”Officer, I’m really OK to drive. I’m really - I swear to God.”
