ALJ's Art Show Puts Young Talent on Display

On the evening of May 21, the Arthur L. Johnson High School Art Department of Clark, presented their annual art show. Teachers Christopher Marcin, Brad Terhune, Bryan Klimchak and Janice Gossman proudly displayed students’ artwork from their variety of art classes.

In addition, linoleum prints were being sold by Gossman’s crafts class with proceeds designated for charity. The art show included works from the beginning drawing classes, pottery from Gossman’s classes, and original puppets from Klimchak’s puppetry classes.

Highlighted were works of the advanced class, Open Studio. The following advanced art students each presented two panels of individual work, which included artists’ statements: Rose Arcure, Jessi Costanzo, Joana Couto, Angelo Fagan, Alison Fernandes, Taylor Kobryn, Joshua Law, Tyler McManus, Taylor McSorley, Raquel Mendez, Karen Mulligan, Sarah Panetta, Samantha Ring, Noel Rotondo, Samantha Vargas and Filip Wojcik.
 
At the opening reception for parents and students, Open Studio teacher Christopher Marcin introduced each student and awarded them a certificate of participation. In addition, he indicated the individual artist’s future college and aspiration.

"Open Studio is an advance course which culminates the various sequences of the art program," said Marcin. "I am so happy our artists are able to showcase their talents and share their passion with everyone. ALJ offers a variety of courses and extracurricular activities, and the arts remain an integral part of our school community."
 
During the reception members of the public and parents circulated through the exhibit. Arthur L. Johnson media specialist, Kate Ryan, was pleased to see the art work in the IMC. "The annual studio art show has found a most welcome home in the Instructional Media Center," said Ryan. "The art teachers at Arthur L. Johnson High School have truly inspired their students to create beautiful and thoughtful artwork. It was fun to see the seniors take such great pride in their displays, and to see the interest and commentary that the art show drew from students and faculty.”
