On Monday, July 18 at 6:30 PM, Elijah’s Promise Culinary School will be hosting their Farm to Table event at the EARTH Center, home to Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County. Located in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave., South Brunswick, the EARTH Center strives to educate central Jersey residents on environmental stewardship and the value of local agriculture.
The Farm to Table series, focuses on supporting locally grown produce, which reduces pollution created by shipping food long distances. This Elijah’s Promise event is the kick-off event for their "Eat Local Challenge", in which they ask residents to shop for food grown within a100 mile radius of New Brunswick. Buying Jersey Fresh produce also encourages growers to continue farming and preserving open space. The guest chefs for the evening will be Claudette Herring and Lauren Phillips of Via45, an Italian eatery in Red Bank, NJ, where all plates are made fresh. Via 45 takes pride in using local seasonal products whenever possible.
Attendees will first tour the EARTH Center’s gardens, then experience the culinary techniques used to prepare seasonal produce. Some of the food prepared for tasting will be harvested from the EARTH Center’s vegetable garden.
Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County staff and volunteers work with Elijah's Promise and Farmers Against Hunger to maintain and harvest produce from a 1,200 sq. ft garden. Food is donated to Elijah's Promise and other local food banks.
There is a $15 suggested donation for attending and registration is required by July 15th. Register by calling 732-545-9002 ext. 110 or by e-mailing btaylor@elijahspromise.net . The event will take place rain or shine. Members of the press are encouraged to attend for pictures and a story on how local efforts can have global environmental impact.
