Johnson Field Hockey Falls 7-1 to West Essex in Group 2 Semifinals
Johnson fell to West Essex by a score of 7-1 in the Group 2 semifinal round at Boonton High School.
Johnson fell to West Essex (21-1) 7-1 in the Group 2 semifinals at Boonton High School behind an unyielding offensive attack from the Knights.
West Essex were in control from the opening whistle, keeping the ball in the Johnson half for much of the period. The Knights dictated the pace of play with the combination of their team speed, strength and athleticism, giving the Johnson defense fits all afternoon.
The West Essex attack proved too strong and persistent, as goalie Becky Brattole was faced with countless shots from near point blank range. While Brattole was able to hold her own by making some impressive stops, the West Essex attack proved too relentless.

West Essex found much of their offensive success by sending passes or shots into the area right in front of the net, finding a teammate to deflect the shot or put away the rebound.
Johnson’s inability to clear out the area in front of the net as well as the ball offered the talented Essex County squad far too many second chance opportunities.

Despite trailing 5-0 at the half, the Crusaders came out in the second period with a renewed focus and effort in what was a much more competitive half between the two teams.
Defensively, West Essex was able to keep senior Nicole Imbriaco in check for much of the game by offering her few opportunities to create offense.
Imbriaco did draw two penalty shot opportunities, one in the first half and one in the second. Imbriaco’s attempt on the first penalty just missed the left post as the first half wound down. The second penalty shot was taken by Karen Blacklock, who converted on the attempt with a high shot that snuck by the goalie to bring the score to 7-1.
Johnson finishes the season with a record of 19-6 and a second consecutive sectional championship in what was another successful campaign.
