This year, Coach Moran was inducted into the New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association Hall of Fame for his coaching contributions in both Volleyball and Softball. Donna O’Boyle, athletic director believes “Tom Moran is not only a player’s coach, but he is also a parent’s coach. He is a parent’s coach because families entrust their daughters to his beliefs and coaching styles. He is a teacher first and coach second. Any student who plays volleyball, basketball or softball for him, knows that good grades come first. It is no coincidence that Tom’s success in the classroom spills over to the court or playing field.”
In his 18 years of coaching varsity volleyball at Mother Seton, Tom Moran has brought his team to 10 straight state tournaments. He boasts three 20 win seasons, 4 Divisional Titles and has taken the team to 2 GMC Championship games.

In softball, his teams appeared in 11 straight NJSIAA tournaments. In 2012, he took his 22nd seeded team all the way to the Quarterfinals by upsetting the 4th seeded South Plainfield team.
Kevin RJ Downey, assistant volleyball and softball coach says, “Tom’s passion for his athletes, both on and off the court, have accelerated Mother Seton’s sports programs into competitive and contending teams. Assisting Tom in both Volleyball and Softball, you get a first-hand look into his care and enthusiasm for the athlete’s development over the course of the season. His accomplishments go beyond the courts and classrooms. Creating an atmosphere for all athletes, even those he does not coach, become role models for the rest of the school community.”
In addition to coaching his players, Tom instills values in his players on and off the court and field. He involves his teams in charitable efforts to help support those less fortunate. He lets his players understand that their talents can be valued beyond the game. He also instills an ethic of good sportsmanship in all his players. This value is recognized by other GMC coaches and shows through in many sportsmanship awards his teams have garnered over the years.
Mother Seton is blessed to have a coach that values teamwork, academic achievement and the emphasis on character for all of his players. This award is well-deserved and the entire Mother Seton community is celebrating this accomplishment with him.
