New Program to Give Parents Access to Students' Grades

Parents of students in middle school and high school can monitor their child's progress starting mid-October.

Parents will have access to monitor their students’ grades as early as mid-October thanks to a program announced during the Board of Education meeting Tuesday.

The program, Parent Portal, will allow parents to monitor their child’s progress online in between report cards, said Board Member Sheri Sandler.

“The students might not be too happy about it, but it’s a way to take charge of student’s progress,” Sandler said.

The program will be available to parents of students in Arthur L. Johnson and Carl. H. Kumpf Middle School.

The program is currently in a pilot stage where a handful of parents tried out the system.

Sandler said the pilot was successful, so the program will be available to everyone in mid-October.

Teachers will post grades on the site so parents can follow how their student is doing in each class. Each student will have an individual login on the website to ensure privacy.

The system will also track attendance, upcoming assignments and discipline records per class.

Parents will also be able to contact the teacher through the portal to ask questions on the progress of their child.

The program is already instituted at other high schools throughout the country, including several districts in New Jersey.

“This will make parents more hands-on in the class,” Sandler said.
