The Jamboree Trek to the Summit of Garden Ground Mountain – Day 9 – July 23, 2013

The Jamboree Trek is one of the highlights of the Jamboree experience and was advertised as an all-day adventure beginning at the unit campsite in the sub camp.  Troop B410 was prepared for an early rise and a 6 am breakfast. Scouts ensured they had all of the necessary supplies for a successful trek: lunch, adequate water, rain gear, and in this case, with all of the recent rain, particular attention to foot care, several pair of clean socks.   Approximately three-quarters of the Troop opted-in to join the six-mile hike to Garden Ground Mountain led by an Order of the Arrow (OA) trek guide. Our Trek guide was from Virginia Beach, Virginia, the son of a Navy family, and guided our Troop via a route of moderate difficulty. All Scouts masterfully handled the challenge and in the process they learned about the caterpillar method for ascending a mountain from one of our Assistant Scoutmasters, C. Dale Pritchett.

Once the Scouts ascended the summit of the Bechtel Summit Reserve, where the elevation reaches its highest point at 2,798 feet at the Garden Ground area of the Summit, The scouts had the opportunity to enjoy a lunch and a full day of games and demonstrations.

The Scouts who invested their time and energy for the hike were not disappointed as evidenced by the attached pictures.  The weather broke upon cresting the Summit and the Scouts were treated to not only very favorable weather conditions but a full menu of activities.

The evening was remarkable for the need to wash all of the kitchen equipment and to stow the gear back into two of the three pallets/pods, leaving only the tents and cots up overnight in preparation for our 8 am departure from the Summit back to the Morristown Armory.
