Woman Killed In Early Morning Rahway Fire Identified

Four family members were inside the Washington Street home when the fire broke out on Wednesday morning, only 3 escaped.

RAHWAY, NJ — The identity of a woman who was killed in an early morning fire in Union County on Wednesday has been released.

Shonda Smith, 44, of Rahway was the fatal victim, Rahway Fire Chief Michael Roberts told Patch.

The fire broke out at around 6:10 a.m. at a home at 452 Washington St. in Rahway and was fully involved when Rahway firefighters arrived. There was fire on all floors of the home, Roberts said.

Four members of the family were home at the time of the fire and three were able to escape, Roberts said.

Smith's body was found in a second floor bedroom, Roberts said.

The fire was under control by 6:57 a.m., Rahway Fire Battalion Pat Padabano said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
