Lacrosse Drops Two in a Row, Confidence is Questioned

Panthers' second-consecutive loss by 10-plus goals raises questions about team confidence.

Coming off the heels of a colossal 17-6 loss to Seneca Wednesday, Collingswood lacrosse suffered another blow Thursday, losing 18-4 to Haddonfield Memorial.

After being on the wrong end of a 3-1 score midway through the first half—with a lone goal from sophomore midfielder Amber Stefano—Panthers allowed two more unanswered goals and headed into halftime down 5-1.

It wasn’t until the second half, though, that things started getting out of hand.

Panthers were outscored by the Bulldawgs 13-3, with Haddonfield orchestrating a 6-0 run at one point.

“We’re in a slump right now,” said senior midfielder Jordan Calderone, who scored one of the Panthers’ three goals. “There’s something that’s just not clicking right now. We lost a little something along the way and now we have to try to get it back.”

Calderone—who leads Panthers in goal-scoring this season—even pushed the offensive end of the field during final game minutes, but to no avail.

“It’s really hard,” said Calderone. “Our coach is always telling us not to force anything (on offense), but when you’re down by so much, what else can you do?”

Panthers' two other goals came from junior attack Alli Hawco and senior center Beth LaBar. LaBar scored on the game’s final possession, but Collingswood's fate was already sealed.

“I think our confidence has been going down,” said Calderone after her team's second-consecutive loss Thursday. “Then again, (Haddonfield) was really on today, too.”

Panthers take the field again Friday, at home against Maple Shade High School. Winslow Township will play on the Panthers' turf next, at 10 a.m this Saturday.
