Lacrosse Sees Preseason Loss Monday

Senior Jordan Calderone scored twice, but Panthers fell to Cherry Hill East in final scrimmage.

It was another cold, windy afternoon in Camden County Monday, and it proved to also be another rough outing for Collingswood High School’s lacrosse team.

The Panthers fell, yet again, in their preseason. This time it was by a score of 19-5 to the visiting Cherry Hill East High School Cougars.

In familiar fashion, senior captain Jordan Calderone, who played most of the scrimmage at attack, led the team in scoring. She finished the contest with two goals, both of which came during the first half. Calderone's second goal was impressive, in which she broke down the Cherry Hill East defense and ducked underneath two Cougars to guide the ball into the net.

“I’m definitely trying to be the team’s leading scorer,” said Calderone. “I think I have to set the tone for us. Scoring is my favorite part of the game, so I’m definitely trying to bring that to our team.”

In addition to Calderone’s pair of goals, points were also scored by senior center Beth LaBar, and midfielders junior Nicole Valianti and sophomore Ellie O’Neill.

In spite of the disparity and selflessness among the Panthers’ offense Monday, it was clear that the team still must make several changes before this weekend's season opener.

“We’re definitely struggling with defense,” said Calderone. “Even on offense, none of us know what the other is thinking. So we don’t know who's going where. We need to talk more, out on the field.”

Whether the solution comes in the form of on-field discussions, a more tenacious defensive end or a higher-powered offensive attack, Panthers are hoping changes they're making will bring a different outcome during the season opener today—Saturday, April 2.

The Collingswood Panthers will travel to Gloucester City today—Saturday—to take on the Gloucester Catholic High School Rams. The game is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
