Meet the Panthers: Varsity Tennis Team

Get to know Collingswood High School's varsity tennis team in this question-and-answer segment.

Collingswood High School's tennis team has currently found itself at .500 with a 4-4 record. This past Monday, before the Panthers' spring break officially ended and they resumed practicing for Tuesday's match against Haddon Heights, Collingswood Patch Sports Editor Mathew P. Shanley had a chance to sit down and talk to five members of the varsity team. Now, it’s your turn to learn a little bit more about the athletes behind Panthers tennis.

 

Q: What’s your favorite professional sports team?

  • Randy Watkins, Senior, First Doubles: Definitely the Flyers.
  • Albert Charles Cavallaro, Senior, Second Doubles: It’s between Manchester United, New Castle and Napoli European football clubs.
  • David Phillipe, Senior, First Doubles: Any soccer team, really.
  • Peter Siv, Junior, First Singles: The Philadelphia Phillies.
  • Ryan Dick, Sophomore, Second Doubles: My favorite team is the Phillies.

 

Q: Do you play any other sports for Collingswood?

  • Watkins: I play soccer and I bowl, but I golf and wakeboard for fun, too.
  • Cavallaro: I play soccer for Collingswood. I also play baseball, wiffleball, football and basketball—but not well—with my friends.
  • Phillipe: I don’t play any other sports for Collingswood, but I like playing soccer, basketball and football for fun.
  • Siv: I swim for Collingswood, but I play golf in my free time.
  • Dick: I play soccer and basketball for the school, but I play baseball and football for fun.

 

Q: What’s your favorite food?

  • Watkins: Pizza is my favorite food, but I’ll eat anything from Chik-fil-A or McDonalds, too.
  • Cavallaro: Panzerottis, cheesesteaks, and tacos or burritos.
  • Phillipe: Pizza.
  • Siv: I love all food.
  • Dick: Chik-fil-A.

 

Q: Who is your favorite athlete?

  • Watkins: Ville Leino.
  • Cavallaro: I like European football players Javier Fernandez and Andy Carroll. They’re both champions.
  • Phillipe: N/A
  • Siv: Caroline Wozniacki.
  • Dick: My favorite player of all time is Brett Favre.

 

Q: What’s your favorite movie?

  • Watkins: Green Street Hooligans.
  • Cavallaro: Either The Usual Suspects or Snatch.
  • Phillipe: Dawn of the Dead.
  • Siv: Saving Private Ryan.
  • Dick: Land of the Lost.

 

Q: How long have you been playing tennis?

  • Watkins: I’ve been playing for about 10 years.
  • Cavallaro: I really didn’t start playing tennis until freshman year, and I didn’t start playing well until junior year.
  • Phillipe: Eight years.
  • Siv: I’ve been playing tennis for 11 years.
  • Dick: I’ve only been playing for about two years.

 

Q: What’s your favorite aspect of Collingswood High School?

  • Watkins: Mr. Roos.
  • Cavallaro: I love all of it so much, it’s hard to pick one aspect. I do like Mr. Roos, too, though.
  • Phillipe: I really like all of my classes this year.
  • Siv: My favorite part about Collingswood High School is participating in all the activities at school.
  • Dick: The tennis team.

 

Q: What do you like best about playing tennis?

  • Watkins: Winning.
  • Cavallaro: What I really like about tennis is the tan, and the babes that come with playing it.
  • Phillipe: I like the fact that athleticism is such a big part of tennis.
  • Siv: I enjoy executing in big matches. I like taking the point in tough situations.
  • Dick: The best part is, when you’re on the tennis team, you get all the babes.
