Preseason Delays May Continue in Today's Season Opener

As they try to prepare for the season's start, Panthers baseball sees yet another scrimmage cancellation.

The Collingswood High School baseball team, who saw yet another alteration to its preseason schedule on Wednesday, is trying to make the best of the latest delay.

Originally scheduled for a Wednesday scrimmage against Hammonton, the game has been rescheduled.

With Wednesday's news still fresh, the team decided to take the field anyway for practice. But practice isn't necessarily a bad thing, since it's all in preparation for the Panthers' season opener which, with weather permitting, will take place today—Friday, April 1.

Today's season opener will bring visitors—Sterling High School's Silver Knights—to Collingswood's home field, at The Knight Park.

The opener is scheduled to begin at 3:45 p.m. this afternoon.

But as of early this morning (Friday), Weather.com reports a 50 percent chance of rain throughout daytime hours.

And Friday's Weather.com forecast shows not only rain—but also a chance of snow showers.

From 6 a.m. to about noon, Weather.com predicts rain, with a possibility of snow showers sometime around 9 a.m. And though the forecast calls for rain to stop around 3 p.m., it's predicted to return soon after, and continue into nighttime hours.

But even if rain stops in time for today's 3:45 p.m. season opener, showers earlier in the morning could alter field conditions. And as Panthers have recently learned, a rained-out field can cause cancellations—even if showers have stopped by game-time.

Whether or not baseball season opens traditionally today depends on another kind of season—and whether the first day in April follows its own tradition—of April showers.
