Black Bear Captured In Garwood

Breaking: A black bear that caused a delayed opening of Brookside Place School on Monday has been captured in Garwood.

CRANFORD, NJ — The black bear spotted early Monday morning in Cranford has been captured in Garwood by NJDEP Fish and Wildlife Division, Cranford Police announced around 1:15 p.m.

The bear was originally spotted in the area of Beech Street around 8:30 a.m., and as a result Brookside Place School in Cranford had a delayed opening of 9:45 a.m.

The bear was then contained by authorities in Garwood around 12:30 p.m. while police awaited animal control's response.

There were numerous black bear sightings over the weekend, once in Westfield and twice in Summit.

  • June 11 at around 8:30 p.m.: A bear was seen on Lawrence Avenue near Sinclair Place in Westfield.
  • June 11 at 7:50 a.m.: A black bear was spotted in the area of Colt Road and Cleveland Road in Summit.
  • On June 10 at 4:28 p.m.: A black bear sighting was reported in the area of Passaic Avenue and Constantine Place in Summit.
